The programs at our Yonge and Bloor Centre at St. Andrew’s Church first began in 1987. With the success of Sunshine Centre’s summer program on Ward’s Island, it became clear that there was a need for more recreational services and a supportive network for seniors during the fall and winter months. Through a collaborative effort between St. Andrew’s United Church, the Toronto Board of Education and Sunshine Centres, we began offering day programming out of St. Andrew’s United Church. The Yonge and Bloor program location offers seniors healthy and uplifting social and recreational activities throughout the fall and winter months, and is easily accessible to seniors across the city.
Since its inception, the Yonge and Bloor program has grown considerably. The Yonge and Bloor centre now offers days of programming per week, including two daytime drop-in programs with lunch, fitness classes and Toronto District School Board painting classes and seniors’ exercise classes. With its central location, busy program schedule and wheelchair accessible building, the Yonge and Bloor program has attracted many longtime participants and is always open for new seniors to join at anytime.
