Policies Regarding Attendant
Care and/or Group Participation 1. Once a tentative booking is made, please have the Group Application & Appropriate release signed and returned with fees so we can confirm your visit. 2. If you wish to order ferry tickets ahead of time, they are available through SCS for $3.50 per round trip ticket. 3. SCS will provide tea and cookies in the morning, soup and tea at lunch and a cold drink in the afternoon assuming normal timelines are adhered to. Participants bring their own sandwich for lunch. Members of a group will be seated together. However, independent individuals are welcome to choose their own seating arrangement. 4. Please ask participants to bring along a light sweater or wrap since the Island is normally cooler than temperatures in the city. 5. For special groups/nursing homes attending the Ward's Island Program, one person from each group designated as the Group Leader should hand in a sheet containing the names of all the members of your group including staff and volunteers. 6. SCS staff will be engaged in program delivery, safety, food service, transportation as well as moving furniture & equipment. We cannot undertake attendant care. Therefore, one attendant (staff or volunteer) must be provided by your group for every person with extra care needs who may require assistance with mobility aids or wheelchair or for transfers, toileting, feeding. 7. Staff attending with a group should cooperate with SCS staff to ensure that the SCS program can be somewhat flexible. When not attending to individual needs, nursing home staff may be called upon to call bingo, assist with crafts, etc. to accommodate several different levels of activity. 8. The Ward's Island location is somewhat isolated, so persons with severe cognitive limitations, especially those with a propensity to wander, are not appropriate candidates for the program. 9. Arrival & Departure: 9:45 a.m. Ferry in the morning and 3:30 p.m. Ferry in the afternoon. Since food service & group activities follow a set format, those arriving on a later ferry or leaving earlier would require special accommodation. Please try to adhere to normal timelines where possible. 10. All wheelchairs should have seatbelts. Wheelchairs MUST have footrests due to uneven terrain on island. All volunteers should be properly trained in correct handling of wheelchairs. Thank you for helping us deliver warmth, beauty and fun to seniors.
